The question is will iAds begin to change the nature of app development? Will app developers become more interested in ubiquity on a free app than in revenue on a paid app. iAd is Apples attempt at changing the mix of free and paid apps and early indications are it may have the power to change some developer’s minds on free apps.
iAd allows developer to publish apps for free that offer users a service that causes them to open and use the app frequently. The more time an app is opened and used the more views or impressions the Ad gets and the more opportunity one of those ads has to catch a users eye resulting in a click through. Developers of apps get paid for impressions and click through.
A few simple apps with iAd in them earned as much as $1,500 in the first day of the iAd release. If that trend holds, I believe we will see more developers move to free apps that include iAd. By doing this, developers open the possibility of attracting far more uses of their apps and could potentially make more money over a longer period of time than charging up front for the app.

Android makes big gains in the smartphone space

The smartphone market continues to change quickly. Android made some big gains in the first half of 2010 with the release of some great phones and updates to the OS. As this chart from Mashable shows, Android even made inroads on the iPhone. I am guessing some of that will turn around now that iOS4 is out and the iPhone 4.
